They weren’t as free as we think… (Richard Sibbes)

Not even Adam and Eve were as free as we tend to think:

The greatest and sweetest liberty is when we have no liberty to sin at all, when we cannot sin…So men are mistaken to think the greatest liberty is to have power to do good or evil. Such power is the imperfection of the creature. Man was at first created to do either good or evil of himself, that he might fall of himself. This was not strength, but followed from a creature that came out of nothing and was subject to fall of his own principles…We see clearly, then, that grace does not take away liberty, but establishes it.

– Richard Sibbes, Glorious Freedom, pp. 47-48.

  •  2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
