An Electronic Commonplace Book

When I started this blog I essentially wanted it to be the equivalent of a ‘commonplace book.’ It has not turned out to be exactly that. After reading Isaac Watts’ books on Logic and the Improvement of the Mind (which are two wonderful books by the way), I decided to implement some of his suggestions via the blog. In other words, this blog is primarily selfish. I use it as a means to record things I want to remember – whether it be quotes, trains of thought, impressions of a book, etc.

My new category entitled, ‘commonplace book’ will seek to do what I wanted to do from the beginning. I will use that tag to record pithy sayings and proverbial wisdom that I come across. These are quotes that are punchy and worth remembering. For my first installment, I wanted to record something one of my professors said in a lecture today:

“I’d rather burn out than rust out.’  Apparently, Millard Fillmore said something to that effect. I think it’s worth remembering.

Right after hearing my teacher say this I was perusing Facebook and noticed a picture. It had graffiti on a wall: ‘Spread Anarchy,’ it said. Someone had painted it out and written over it, ‘Don’t tell me what to do.’ Hypocrisy is often easily exposed.

From here on out the ‘Commonplace’ posts will just be quotes, and maybe, but not always, a comment or two. You can see my collection of quote by clicking the Commonplace Book category at the bottom of the page.
