…As Long As You Do Not Really Believe It

The modern version of tolerance is the idea that it does not matter what you believe as long as you do not really believe it.

Haha. Yeah. I’m confronted with that philosophy on a daily basis in my work. In C.S. Lewis’ essay “The Way”, he says “An open mind, in questions that are not ultimate, is useful. But an open mind about the ultimate foundations either of Theoretical or of Practical Reason is idiocy.” The world today often employs a bate-and-switch tactic in “proving” the goodness of an “open mind.” They use an example of being open about a question that is “not ultimate,” and then say “see? that’s why you must ALWAYS have an open mind. You must believe, but always remember your beliefs are just illusions.”

I started reading Living into Focus yesterday. Please let me know when you’re ready to start, and if there is any plan of attack that you’d like to follow. If you like, I can make a post that can serve as home base to bring up points that are worthy of discussion. I’m open to whatever.

After I started reading him I realized that I had heard him on a free download I got from Mars Hill. I remembered the phrase ‘focal practices.’ It should be interesting.

I’ll start this Friday, and plan to finish the book by the 27th. That’s 14 days. 15 pages a day, if I read every day but Sundays. Should be just fine for me. I can easily read slower, but this wagon isn’t going any faster.

Yes, please make that home-base post. I love that idea. My wife is going to read along and participate too. I have a friend who said he would join us as well.
